A parasite is spreading through Florida, and it really is as bad as it’s sounds.
It’s called rat lungworm and can cause meningitis in humans and animals.
University of Florida researchers tested rats and snails, and samples from Hillsborough, Orange, Alachua, St. Johns and Leon Counties all tested positive for the parasite. They said it’s likely in many more places.
You can get the parasite by eating infected raw or undercooked snails or slugs, and freshwater shrimp, crabs or frogs. It can also be transmitted through raw produce.
